Ellwanger Gardens
May 23, 2005 | 2:22 p.m.
This ivy-covered shed window is part of Ellwanger Gardens, the famous estate of George Ellwanger, who was a 19th-century nurseryman. Ellwanger not only built America's largest horticultural firm but also gave Rochester land for Highland Park, which would later be planned by Frederick Law Olmsted and become the home of the country's largest annual lilac festival.
Ellwanger was so succesful with his nursery business that Rochester became nicknamed “The Flower City,” a title that it retains today.
